Shoulder Pain Treatment
The shoulder is made up of several joints, tendons and muscles allowing you to have a wide range of motion in the arm. The main parts that make up your shoulder are: your rotator cuff, your upper arm bone (humerus), your shoulder blade (scapula) and your collarbone (clavicle). A combination of muscles and tendons keep your arm centered in your shoulder socket. These tissues are called the rotator cuff. When it comes to treating the pain in your shoulder, our goal is to avoid surgery. Our patients benefit from a combination of the following:
Causes Of Shoulder Pain
The majority of patients who are experiencing shoulder pain fit into one of the the following categories:
- Tendon Inflammation
Bursitis and tendinitis are two different types inflammation in the tendons. Bursae are tiny, fluid filled sacs that are located in the joints throughout the body. They act as cushions to help reduce friction between the muscles and bone. Excessive use of the shoulder can result in inflammation and swelling within the bursa. This can cause many daily activities, such as combing your hair or getting dressed to become difficult.
Tendinitis occurs when the tendon that connects the muscle and bone wear down over time. The tendons that is affected the most in the shoulder is the rotator cuff and the bicep tendons.Your rotator cuff helps provide motion and stability.
Shoulder instability occurs from overuse or sudden injury. This is when the upper arm bone is forced out of socket. There are partial and complete shoulder dislocation. When the tendons, ligaments and muscles become loose and torn, dislocation can become more common. This increases the chances of arthritis in your shoulder joints.
There are many types of arthritis. The most common type we see in the shoulder of patients is osteoarthritis, also known as ‘wear and tear’ arthritis. Middle aged individuals will start experiencing swelling, pain and stiffness. Most patients will try to limit movements in the shoulder to avoid pain. This will only make you condition worse. Call Align Medical and Chiropractic for treatment and therapy options.
Shoulder fractures usually involve the clavicle, humerus and scapula. Older patients usually fracture their shoulder from falling while younger patients shoulder fractures are caused by motor vehicle accidents or sports injury. Severe pain, swelling and bruising ar the shoulder are all common injuries.
